Arenas Finally Signs with Wizards
Thursday 07-17-2008 11:53am ET
Gilbert Arenas lived up to his word and accepted less money when he signed a six-year, $111 million contract with the Washington Wizards after he returned from his trip to China.
Both sides agreed to the deal before his departure, but Arenas and the Wizards organization waited until his return to finally settle the deal.
The team had offered a maximum contract worth $127 million over six years, but Gilbert Arenas had said before that he was willing to accept less money so the team could use what was left to sign a free agent and help the quality of the players around him.
Arenas also said he wanted the organization to keep teammate Antawn Jamison, which they did when he signed a four-year contract worth $50 million.
Now that Agent Zero has accepted less money, the Wizards have enough cap room to make a strong addition to the team in order to put them close to winning a championship.
Gilbert is coming off two significant knee surgeries that sidelined him for 66 games during the 2007-2008 season.
Wizards Summer Mini Camp Day 2
Saturday 07-12-2008 3:00pm ET

Just returned from Verizon Center where the Wizards held the second session of their summer mini camp before they leave tomorrow for Las Vegas. Eddie Jordan put the guys through a scrimmage then shooting drills before releasing them. Cuts will be made tonight or tomorrow, and the team will take somewhere between 10 and 12 players for the summer league out in Vegas. There are already at least seven players locked into the roster (Blatche, Young, McGuire, Pecherov, Brown, McGee, and Veremeenko), so that leaves very few slots for the rest of the players. A few things stood out today from what we saw. First, Dominic McGuire really has been working on his jumper. Mike Jones of the Washington Times spotted how much more smooth he looks. He was draining everything, from the corner to the top of the key, from mid ranger to threes. He still has a slight hitch, and releases the ball low down close to his head, but his stroke has improved. No doubt he has been working with Dave Hoppla on getting his tecnique straight. Nick Young's jumper is as beautiful as any in the NBA, but he just seems almost too smooth at times. If he misses shots, he always misses them short - his arc is so crisp that the ball sometimes doesn't get to the rim. But he has a dead-eye stroke and he glides to spaces that no one else can really get too. He really has a Dwayne Wade-Rudy Gay type feel to his game, and if he can put it all together there is no doubt he can be on the level with those guys. Vladimir Veremeenko was there and in limited action looks very impressive. He's got a terrific NBA body, really well built with a good frame, and he moves very well for a four. He's was working out pick and roll drills with Etan Thomas, Frank Elegar, and some of the other bigs, and he has good explosiveness, crisp footwork, and finishes very well. He fumbled a few passes, but otherwise in fundamental drills he impressed for sure. If he ever came over, he could develop into a very nice power forward in the league. Dee Brown's enthusiasm is another thing that sticks out immediately - he calls out plays, claps and hollers, and encourages his teammates. He also introduced himself to absolutely everyone in the gym, from ball boys to media to pr. His personality is tailor-made for this specific locker room. He doesn't have to play a single minute to have an impact, but he also fits on the court. He relishes defending and pushing the break, which is two things this team was sorely lacking last year. His interview (audio below) was really insightful. He's a great addition for his leadership and intangibles, as well as the role he'll fit as a third point. Two injuries were to Oleksiy Pecherov and JaVale McGee - both seem to be fine however. Audio is from Vladimir Veremeenko (who really doesn't speak english as you'll hear), and Dee Brown. Dee's interview is an absolute must listen for a Wizards fan - you'll see what we mean by his enthusiasm just by what he says here. (photo from wizards.com)

Utah Will Not Match Wizards' Offer To Dee Brown
Friday 07-11-2008 8:26am ET
FROM THE WASHINGTON POST:
Jazz Won't Match Wizards' Offer to BrownFriday, July 11, 2008; Page E02 The Utah Jazz will not match an offer sheet the Washington Wizards have extended to restricted free agent point guard Dee Brown, according to multiple league sources familiar with the situation. Brown, who played 49 regular season and eight playoff games as a rookie with the Jazz during the 2006-07 season but played in Turkey last season, agreed to a two-year partially guaranteed deal with the Wizards on Wednesday. The Jazz retained the right to match any offer made to Brown because it tendered him a qualifying offer following the 2006-07 season. The 6-foot, 181-pound Brown will play with the Wizards' summer league team in Las Vegas next week. Brown, who starred at Illinois along with Jazz all-star Deron Williams, could fill Washington's need for a third point guard, one who can spell veterans Gilbert Arenas and Antonio Daniels and provide insurance in case of injuries. During one stretch last season, when Arenas was out following left knee surgery and Daniels was out with a sprained knee, the Wizards were forced to play without a true point guard. "Dee is a player who can bring quickness and energy to our team," Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. "We like that he gives us depth and a different look at the point guard position." Utah has until Wednesday to match the offer sheet but the team will not do so because it is set at point guard with Williams, Ronnie Price and Jason Hart, according to a source familiar with the situation. Brown averaged 1.9 points and 1.7 assists while seeing limited playing time with the Jazz. Once Brown officially signs, the Wizards will have 13 players under contract. Arenas is expected to sign the six-year, $111 million deal he and the team have agreed to when he returns from a trip to Asia and Europe next week. Once Arenas and Brown are signed, the Wizards will still have about $2.5 million under the luxury tax threshold ($71.15 million) to add another free agent.
