2010-07-31 11:28:00

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired reliever Chad Qualls from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named later. The right-handed Qualls has posted an 8.29 earned run average, the worst of his seven-year career, with 12 saves in 38 innings over 43 appearances this season. Prior to 2010, his highest ERA in any season was 3.76 in 2006, when he pitched for Houston.

In 433 career appearances with the Astros and Diamondbacks, Qualls has posted a 3.75 ERA, 51 saves and a 30-26 record. He has struck out 368 and walked 124 in 447 2/3 career innings.

Qualls, 31, will join a Rays bullpen that ranks third in the majors with a 3.18 ERA, and will be in uniform for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees.
